Final improved video

This is my final improved video for Vs The World by Under The Influence. Further explained in the fourth part of my evaluation, i used my skills on Final Cut Pro to change the colour of the performance piece of the song. I also matched the lip synching more efficiently and changed some of the shots around to fir the generic conventions more.

Evaluation 4 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For the final part of the evaluation i used the programme 'Microsoft Powerpoint'.

Evaluation 3 - How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?

This section of the evaluation was completed in the form of a written essay.

Firstly, the Digipak that we created inspired me to include the effects in our music video. the purple effect during the chorus was implemented to look like spray from a can, this i thought linked well with the whole rebellious theme that we had in mind. The black and white effect that is in place during the singing of the chorus adds originality in that it stands out and will be recognised when it is flicked back and fourth from the narrative. After finishing the video, i looked back at the ancillary texts that i created and changed some of the clips around. I felt that certain parts when the chorus were sung should have been in a different place, and would have made the video more generic. I also altered the lip synching when looking back at the video, this improved the quality of it and made the lyrics and visuals appear to  coincide together better. Examples of the purple and black and white filter can be seen below:

I took into account the star image on Tim Burgess that i wrote earlier in the year, along with the numerous music video analysis' that i did and tried to apply my extra knowledge to the video. There are two main stars in our music video, the singer who sings the chorus and the rapper who is the main image throughout the narrative in the video. Through completing my star image on Tim Burgess i was able to understand how a star is represented in a music video. I tried to adapt that to our music video, so i implemented numerous close ups of the star as they are singing, to make the stars the main focus of the video. In videos by many English bands, which include The Stone Roses, Oasis, The Charlatans they all use the lead singer as a style of iconography for the band. Through studying my ancillary texts, i implemented this heavily in our video. Some of the shots of the chorus being sung occasionally  have a long duration, this is to get the star image across of the lead singer, which i thought was vital to develop through studying my ancillary texts.

Through the study of my music videos, North Country Boy by The Charlatans in particular, i got a sense of how the narrative and performance cross over should have been created in our video. In North Country Boy by The Charlatans, the video is concept based, with Tim Burgess being the main star and the band walking through Manchester. Although singing is present in the video, there is no use of instruments to convey the music, something that i found intriguing when coming up for the idea of our music video. We decided that for the performance piece of the video, we were just going to have singing as opposed to instruments being played, as the aggression of the song is still conveyed and the narrative can be given more time. The Charlatans can be seen performing North Country Boy without instruments below:

The study of bands more like Under The Influence as part of our ancillary texts, such as Deaf Havana, enabled us to get a sense of the mise-en scene and editing that we should include in our video. We adopted the use of t-shirts and jeans as costumes, and used that in our video. The rebellious theme that we used in the narrative of our video was also created following the study of our ancillary texts, as the music is rather aggressive, we felt that a rebellious element in a classroom would have been an original idea but also generic of other videos that have a similar theme to them. The Digipak that we created involves graffiti, with the streets being seen on them to go alongside the lyrics of the video and the rebellious theme that we adopted. The scrunched playing card that we used for our poster is similar to the logo from Under The Influence which we found through studying our ancillary texts, so we used Photoshop to create it and give the band a logo to use.

Upon finishing our main text, i looked back at our ancillary texts and checked if anything could have been changed to enhance the quality of our video. We filmed some more shots to increase the pacing of the video, which ultimately matched the music a lot better. Albeit we did include more shots, we do still have longer duration shots during the chorus, which as mentioned before were added to develop the star image of the artists. To conclude on how effective the combination of our main and ancillary texts are, i feel the ancillary texts were vital in creating the mood and the meaning in regards to the genre of our music video. I think that without the ancillary texts, we would have struggled hugely in both ideas for our music video and the kind of narrative and performance that we ultimately included.

Digipak and advert final

Above are the five sections to our final Digipak idea. The Digipak is called "VS THE WORLD" by Under The Influence. We made the Digipak on photoshop and have gone for a colourful tone to represent the diverse nature of the music, being different genres. we tried to be original with our Digipak by different areas of streets and creating a screwed up playing card for our advert which can be seen below.

Filming 2

We are nearing the end of our filming and will soon finish editing our music video. We recently filmed most of the performance piece for the video. Without using the instruments, we filmed all of the parts between the chorus where the lead singer is rapping while looking into the camera. We tried to fit the chorus of the song with the narrative piece of the video.

Filming

We are set to film the remainder of the piece on Wednesday morning. We will film the performance piece in either the music block or the photography room on the day. We will also finish the remainder of our narrative piece and fit the two of them together. We plan to use different instruments to correspond with the sound from the song.

Storyboard 2

Storyboard 1

Here is the storyboard that i created for our upcoming music video "Vs The World". The storyboard will lay the foundation for our video, and the majority of the video will coincide with the storyboard. However, there may be some shots that we include in the video that are not present on the storyboard.

New idea

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, we had to change the concept to our film again, causing a further delay.

We decided to use a different main character who suits the role of the main performer. We will integrate a performance and narrative piece to coincide together. the narrative piece revolves around a group of late teenagers being rebellious in a classroom. the main character will lean back from time to time when we will add the transition of a dissolve to cut to the performance piece. The song will play throughout the video, and we will lip sync the performance piece.

above is a shot from our editing programme "Final cut". Here the our main character is leaning back just before a dissolve will take place to change from the narrative to the performance piece.
